Pothole Damage in Halifax – Tyres, Wheels and Suspension Checks

As a garage owner and keen driver, potholes have concerned me for many years. Here at Pellon Tyres and Autocentre, we see the inconvenience and unexpected expense they can cause motorists.

My original article discussed road repair funding for 2015–2021. That announcement belongs to the past, but checking a vehicle after a significant pothole impact remains relevant today.

What damage can a pothole cause?

A hard impact can damage tyres, wheels, steering or suspension components. It may also disturb wheel alignment.

Sometimes the damage is obvious, such as a flat tyre. Other problems may become noticeable through a change in steering, vibration or an unfamiliar noise.

Do not assume that everything is sound simply because the tyre has stayed inflated.

What should I do after an impact?

If you notice a problem, stop somewhere safe and assess whether the vehicle can be driven safely.

Look for visible tyre damage, a bulge, pressure loss or wheel damage. If steering or handling has changed significantly, arrange assistance rather than continuing your journey.

Avoid crawling beneath the vehicle at the roadside.

Does pulling to one side mean I need alignment?

It may warrant an alignment check, but tyre damage or a damaged steering or suspension component can also affect the way a car drives.

An inspection should come before assuming an adjustment will solve the problem.

Report potholes in Calderdale

Reporting a defect helps the council identify where attention may be needed.

Use Calderdale Council’s road and pavement defect reporting page and provide a clear location.

Only take photographs where you can do so safely. Do not put yourself in traffic to record a pothole.

Keep the details of any damage

If your car needs Repairs, keep the inspection findings, photographs and invoices. Record when and where the impact happened while the details are fresh.
